CONSTRUCTION PROBLEMS & FAILURE INVESTIGATIONS

Pikul Engineering (PKL) has found that major failures can generally be attributed to several parties because such failures typically represent a complete break-down of the “checks and balances” that normally exist in the design/construction industry.  Often major failures can be attributed to a break-down in communications between owners, designers and contractors.  PKL has worked with numerous Attorneys, Contractors, Insurance Adjusters and Owners to investigate (prepare comprehensive reports), trouble-shoot (recommend corrective action), and assist in the settlement or litigation (including expert testimony) of claims due to the following types of construction problems and failures:

Construction Claims due to contract, plans/specifications and performance issues;

Concrete Slab (floors, pavements) curling, cracking, delaminating and spalling;

Concrete (cast-in-place, precast, prestressed) Structural Element (beams, columns, elevated floors, roof decks, parking decks, wall panels, retaining walls, foundations, bulkheads, dams) shrinking, cracking, leaking, delaminating, spalling, deflecting, distorting, and collapsing;

Masonry (concrete block, brick, stone) Structural Element (chimneys, walls, foundations, panels, parapets) bulging, cracking, deteriorating, leaking, settling and collapsing;

Structural Steel Element (bar joists, beams, bridge girders, columns, frames, towers, trusses, piling)  buckling, corroding, deflecting, distorting, fatiguing, twisting, vibrating, and collapsing;

Timber (logs, dimensional lumber, laminated, plywood/OSB panels) Structural Element (beams, columns, walls/sheathing, floor decks, roof decks, light/heavy trusses) bowing, buckling, warping, shrinking, rotting, distorting, deflecting, cracking and collapsing;

Earth Pressure Damage (cracking, shifting, bowing, deflecting and collapsing) of foundation and retaining walls, during and after construction, due to excessive loads, inadequate temporary bracing, aged construction, and design/construction errors or omissions;

Earthquake, Blasting and Other Vibration Damage (cracking, shifting, bowing, deflecting and collapsing) to commercial, historical, theatrical and residential buildings due to excessive loads, aged construction, and design/construction errors or omissions;

Fire Damage to commercial, industrial, school, residential, and warehouse buildings due to accidental fires, aged construction, and design/construction errors or omissions;

Ice/Snow/Water Damage (leaking, deflecting, cracking, distorting, bowing, heaving and collapsing) to roofs, walls, floors, finishes and foundations of commercial/industrial buildings, residences, historical theatres, school gymnasiums, and warehouses, during and after construction, due to excessive loads, inadequate temporary bracing, and design/construction errors or omissions;

Non-Structural Construction Defects attributed to inadequate design/specifications or poor workmanship;

Water Entry at foundations, walls and roofs resulting in rotting, fungus damage and insect damage to structural members and finished surfaces;

Wind Damage (loss of roofing/siding, shifting, distorting and collapse) to aircraft hangars, commercial/industrial buildings, residences, and warehouses, during and after construction due to excessive loads, inadequate temporary bracing, and design/construction errors or omissions.
